Tips for Including Your Dog in Your Engagement Photos

If you’re wondering if it’s possible, the answer is a big yes. With the right prep, it can go super smoothly. I’m sharing my best tips for including your dog in your engagement photos to help you feel ready. Your pup will stay comfy, and you’ll get beautiful, heart-filled memories.

I get so excited when couples include their dogs in their engagement photos! Your pup is family—let them be part of the magic. Dogs add so much joy, personality, and pure cuteness. Some of my favorite photos ever include wagging tails and slobbery kisses!

So grab the leash, pack some treats, and let’s make magic with your furry best friend! Ready to include your pup in your session?

Bring a Dog Handler or Trusted Friend

One of the best tips for including your dog in your engagement photos? Bring someone your pup knows and loves! A friend or handler can handle treats, toys, and walks while you focus on each other. It takes the pressure off and makes everything smoother. Extra hands = way more fun and way less stress!

Pack the Essentials

Come prepared with the must-haves! Pack treats, water, poop bags, and a favorite toy. Bring something that grabs their attention—like a squeaky toy or snack they love. Don’t forget a lint roller—dog hair happens! These little things help your pup stay happy, comfy, and ready to shine in photos.

Dog-Friendly Location

Pick a location that welcomes dogs. Check park or venue rules before your session. Choose somewhere with space and shade. Avoid busy spots if your dog gets nervous. Familiar places work great too! If you do choose a busy park, arrive a few minutes early. Let your pup sniff around and get comfortable. A calm, confident dog makes for the best photos! Practice Commands Before the Shoot

Practice simple commands before the shoot—sit, stay, and look go a long way. One thing I often see is we naturally give commands while facing our dogs. But for photos, you’ll both be facing me! So try practicing having your pup sit while you stand beside them. Do it a few times before the session. Don’t worry—I’ll help keep their attention on me during the shoot!

Neutral Leash or harness

Choose a neutral-colored leash or harness. Stick to beige, tan, black, or something that blends with your outfits. Avoid bright neon colors or busy patterns. A simple look keeps the focus on you and your pup. If possible, remove any bulky tags just for the photos. Small details make a big difference!

Let Out the Wiggles Before Photos

Give your pup a walk before the session. Let them play or sniff around to release extra energy. A tired pup listens better and feels calmer. This helps us get sweet, snuggly photos instead of zoomie chaos. Just 10–15 minutes can make a big difference!

Bringing your dog is always worth it—they make your photos even more meaningful. One of my favorite tips for including your dog in your engagement photos is to give them a little time to warm up. If your pup has special needs or feels shy, that’s totally okay. I’m happy to arrive a few minutes early to help build trust. It’s 100% possible to include them and make it a fun experience! I can’t wait to meet you and your pup—or even better, pups! Let’s do this!
